Sushi – Never Again!

Do you eat sushi? When it comes to exotic foods, I am a big sissy! I am just now getting to where I can eat normal vegetables like asparagus and spinach without thinking I am going to vomit (sweet potatoes are still on my yucky list), so sushi is serious business for me. :) I guess I just never outgrew some of those childhood aversions to vegetables. Anyway, a few weeks back, Jeremy and I met some friends for dinner at a local Asian restaurant. I was very happy, patiently awaiting my yummy Cashew Chicken and rice (the same thing i order whenever we go out to an Asian place), when I realized that almost all the other adults at the table were ordering sushi. I knew what was coming….

Sure enough, as soon as the sushi arrived, they started trying to get me to try some. I felt like I was back in grade school. “No, I’m not going to stick my tongue on the flag pole!” I was staying strong, and as long as they didn’t pull out the triple-dog-dare, I should be good, right? Wrong! I caved, but with one compromise – I would try one of the sushi wraps but nothing with actual raw fish in it. I think the one I tried had rice, seaweed, crab, and I’m not sure what else.

I really tried, but the moment I put it in my mouth I was trying to hold back the gags. It was a combination of the textures, the taste, and probably a bit of myself getting in the way. Mind over matter, right? I tried to at least swallow it, but I ended up spitting it into an empty napkin! I just wanted to be like all the other grownups! :)

Any sushi fans out there? Any sushi-phobics like me?

  1. I struggle with the texture mostly, but I’m slowly growing to love sushi! The places we go to do many of the traditional sushi and also deep fried sushi items. I started out with some of the deep fried ones and have worked my way up to some of the tuna rolls. I’ve tried the salmon ones, but I don’t like salmon much. My 5 year old son loves eel, so I have a feeling we’ll be trying eel sushi soon.

Big sushi fan here! Several years ago, I was hesitant to try it because of the raw fish. One of my friends insisted that I try it … so I did. I was amazed at the bountiful flavors the bite size pieces had. I have been addicted ever since. I also managed to get my husband to try sushi and he is also equally as addicted now. Most people won’t even consider trying to eat sushi. Now you can say that you have at least tried it! :)

I have tried it, but not sure if I could do it again. :) Maybe if I do, I’ll just try a small piece instead of sticking the whole thing in my mouth!

No sushi for me… not now, not ever- ick! Just like you, I order Cashew chicken or some other nicely cooked dish when we go out for sushi. I’m the only one in the family who won’t eat it.

My husband loves sushi, but the kids have yet to try it, so I don’t feel too much pressure to do it again anytime soon. :)

What Marina said!!! me too! Me! I CANNOT stand sushi. I won’t even eat fish unless it’s covered in tartered sauce and that’s still not more then once a year or so, I hate the fishy smell !!!, oooh Yucky! When I first got married we were took out to eat at a Very Nice fish place, and sea food is just about all they served, well I wanted to say no, but it was so nice of them to take us, so I figured I would try, I hated the smell when I walked in the door, but I took it well until they set some crab legs on the table, I got so sick, the smell just did me in and I upchucked…all over the place. lol I got so sick they had to carry me to the car. Fish is bad enough, there is no way I would do sushi.

I’m with you! My husband and one son LOVE sushi. I’ll stick to my Teriyaki Chicken, thank you!

No, I will not even try it. Have no interest and either does anyone in my family.
I feel for you, really. You did more than I would have.

Oh, and just let me say this. Once a neighbor gave us some fish that he cauught fresh. My Mom and I cooked it and we all ate some. (Mom and I don’t like fish.) We went back into the kitchen to put more on the plate and when we did we saw worms in it-coiled in circles. Oh my gosh, it was so gross we almost barfed! In the trash it went! See why I will NOT eat any?

Those pictures are making me hungry! :) My 6 year old also loves sushi, but I won’t let him try any of the raw stuff. One time I was at a business lunch and two of the guys from the office ordered some kind of shrimp thing where the heads were still on so they were looking up at us. Yuck! So I guess you could say I only like some of it. :)

I have absolutely no desire to eat sushi and neither does my family. I’m up for trying most anything once but can’t bring myself to try sushi.

  11. Im a huge sushi fan. ANd i live with a person who thinks sushi is bait! It’s definitely a functions of textures along with mind-over-matter. Frankly, most sushi has little to no taste – it’s usually a very clean flish with the most mild of flavors. However, people think it’s going to be bad, so they cant get over it!

Next time pour yourself a glass of wine, viognier or gewurztraminer, and focus on that washing the bait down.

    Cheers
    Matt
